CYBERSTALKING AND COLLEGE-AGE STUDENTS: A BIBLIOMETRIC ANALYSIS ACROSS SCHOLARLY DATABASES.
By: PIOTROWSKI, CHRIS; LATHROP, PETER J. College Student Journal. Sep2012, Vol. 46 Issue 3, p533-536. 4p. Abstract: Research on the topic of cyberbullying has proliferated over the past decade, particularly on its impact on school-aged children (see Piotrowski, 2011). However, there is limited research on the incidence and impact of cyberstalking, a related type of cyberabuse, on college-age students. Thus, it would be of interest to examine the extent of research interest in the topic across the leading databases in the social sciences and education. This paper reports on cited references, via a keyword search, for the term cyberstalking. The results showed that PsycINFO, Academic Index, Sociology Abstracts, and PROQUEST Direct indexed the majority of articles on this aberrant social malady. These findings indicate that perhaps college counselors and administrators in higher education may not be aware of the extent and impact that cyberstalking may have on college-age students. Adding insult to injury: effects of interpersonal rejection types, rejection sensitivity, and self-regulation on obsessive relational intrusion.
By: Sinclair, H. Colleen; Ladny, Roshni T.; Lyndon, Amy E. Aggressive Behavior. Nov/Dec2011, Vol. 37 Issue 6, p503-520. 18p. 1 Diagram, 2 Charts, 2 Graphs. Abstract: This study tested the I3 model [Finkel, 2007; 2008] of intimate partner violence as applied to obsessive relational intrusion (ORI) to assess the relation among self-regulation, rejection, rejection sensitivity (RS), and stalking-related aggression. In Study 1, participants ( N=221) read one of three vignettes: no relationship termination, an 'internal' rejection (involves an internal attribution to the rejected as cause of relationship ending), or an 'external' rejection (external attributions for relationship demise). Next, participants experienced one of two conditions manipulating self-regulation (no depletion vs. depletion). Finally, participants rated their likelihood of engaging in ORI (e.g. unwanted pursuit and/or aggression). Consistent with predictions, participants receiving an internal rejection reported higher aggression than participants experiencing an external rejection, especially when depleted of self-regulation. Study 2 extended the design of Study 1 by adding in a screening survey of RS. Internal rejections still yielded more aggression than other conditions, but this was especially so when rejection-sensitive persons were depleted of self-regulation. In addition to providing support for the I3 model of aggression, this research shows that not all types of rejection are created equal. Aggr. Behav. 37:503-520, 2011. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. STUDENT STALKING OF FACULTY: RESULTS OF A NATIONWIDE SURVEY.
By: MORGAN, ROBIN K.; KAVANAUGH, KATHERINE D. College Student Journal. Sep2011, Vol. 45 Issue 3, p512-523. 12p. Abstract: Stalking behaviors on college campuses have been studied and recognized for some time. However, student stalking of college faculty has remained relatively unrecognized. In the present study, college faculty across the United States completed online surveys about their experiences with student stalking in order to obtain lifetime and twelve month prevalence rates. Faculty reported demographic information about their campuses, the types of stalking behaviors experienced, characteristics of the student stalkers, emotional reactions to the stalking incidents, and the impact that student stalking had on the faculty member's behavior in and out of the classroom. Current results replicated previous research on university stalking (Morgan, 2009), both in terms of reported stalking rates and types of stalking behaviors reported. The Association Between Different Types of Intimate Partner Violence Experienced by Women.
By: Krebs, Christopher; Breiding, Matthew; Browne, Angela; Warner, Tara. Journal of Family Violence. Aug2011, Vol. 26 Issue 6, p487-500. 14p. 4 Charts. Abstract: Those who experience intimate partner violence (IPV) are often subjected to multiple types of victimization such as physical violence, sexual violence, psychological aggression, and stalking. However, relatively few studies have used a national population-based sample and multivariate methods to analyze the associations between these different types of violence. This study uses multivariate methods to analyze a national population-based sample of women in order to document empirically the extent to which different types of IPV overlap, while controlling for personal and behavioral characteristics. Results indicated significant levels of overlap, with victims often experiencing more than one type of victimization by an intimate partner. Findings also indicated that women who had experienced violence by non-intimate partners were often more likely to experience violence by intimates. Finally, women who had experienced stalking by an intimate were more likely to experience more forms of IPV on average than those who had experienced physical violence, sexual violence, or emotional aggression. Online Obsessive Relational Intrusion: Further Concerns About Facebook.
By: Chaulk, Kasey; Jones, Tim. Journal of Family Violence. May2011, Vol. 26 Issue 4, p245-254. 10p. 5 Charts. Abstract: Use of online social networking sites such as Facebook has burgeoned in the last 5 years. We examine these sites as facilitators of Online Obsessive Relational Intrusion (o-ORI)-a much-talked about, but relatively un-researched online phenomenon. We draw parallels between the types of behaviors conducted online and those identified in the literature on relational intrusion and its more extreme relative, stalking. We present a frequency analysis of students' behavior on Facebook and find evidence of relational intrusion from both offenders and targets. The behaviors can be classified into five different categories, including: primary contact attempts, secondary contact attempts (i.e., contacting others connected to the target), monitoring or surveillance, expressions, and invitations. We conclude that Facebook facilitates behaviors that are indicative of obsessive relational intrusion and that such behaviors have implications for users' privacy and security.
