Reduced autobiographical memory specificity predicts depression and posttraumatic stress disorder after recent trauma. Kleim, Birgit; Ehlers, Anke; Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, Vol 76(2), Apr 2008. pp. 231-242. [Journal Article] Abstract: In this prospective longitudinal study, the authors examined the relationship between reduced specificity in autobiographical memory retrieval and the development of depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and specific phobia after injury in an assault. Assault survivors (N = 203) completed the Autobiographical Memory Test (J. M. G. Williams & K. Broadbent, 1986) at 2 weeks after the trauma as well as structured clinical interviews at 2 weeks and 6 months. Participants with acute stress disorder or major depression at 2 weeks, but not those with phobia, retrieved fewer specific autobiographical memories than those without the respective disorder. Reduced memory specificity at 2 weeks also predicted subsequent PTSD and major depression at 6 months over and above what could be predicted from initial diagnoses and symptom severity. Moderator analyses showed that low memory specificity predicted later depression in participants with prior episodes of major depression but not in those without prior depression. Mediation analyses suggested that rumination partly mediated and perceived permanent change fully mediated the effects of low memory specificity on posttrauma psychopathology at follow-up. Reduced autobiographical memory specificity and posttraumatic stress: Exploring the contributions of impaired executive control and affect regulation. Dalgleish, Tim; Rolfe, Jennifer; Golden, Ann-Marie; Journal of Abnormal Psychology, Vol 117(1), Feb 2008. pp. 236-241. [Journal Article] Abstract: Reduced specificity of autobiographical memories retrieved to word cues on the Autobiographical Memory Test (AMT) is associated with increased posttraumatic stress in traumatized samples. Theoretical debates concerning the dominant influences on this effect have focused on affect regulation, whereby specific personal information is avoided more by those experiencing greater distress, versus compromised executive control, whereby increased distress is associated with an inability to set aside inappropriately general responses on the AMT. The present study compared these 2 views in a correlational design using a reversed version of the AMT (the AMT-R) for which trauma-exposed participants (N=36) had to generate general memories from the past and avoid specific memories. An emphasis on the role of affect regulation would predict that distress would be associated with reduced specificity (as in the standard AMT), whereas emphasis on the role of executive control would predict that this relationship would be reversed. The data supported the affect regulation account, with greater posttraumatic stress being associated with reduced memory specificity. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2008 APA, all rights reserved)

Impaired specific autobiographical memory as a risk factor for posttraumatic stress after trauma. Bryant, Richard A.; Sutherland, Kylie; Guthrie, Rachel M.; Journal of Abnormal Psychology, Vol 116(4), Nov 2007. pp. 837-841. [Journal Article] Abstract: This study tested the proposal that impaired retrieval of specific autobiographical memories is a risk factor for psychological disturbance after trauma exposure. Trainee firefighters (N = 60) were assessed during training (before trauma exposure) on the Autobiographical Memory Test, Clinician Administered PTSD Scale, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), and Traumatic Events Questionnaire. Participants were reassessed 4 years later (N = 46) on the Posttraumatic Diagnostic Scale and BDI-II. All participants had been exposed to multiple traumatic events, and 15% met criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder. Impaired retrieval of specific memories in response to positive cues prior to trauma exposure significantly predicted posttraumatic stress severity after trauma exposure. These findings provide initial evidence that impaired specific retrieval of memories may be a risk factor for posttraumatic stress. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2007 APA, all rights reserved)

Memory performance and dysfunctional cognitions in recent trauma victims and patients with post-traumatic stress disorder. By: Elsesser, Karin; Sartory, Gudrun. Clinical Psychology & Psychotherapy, Nov/Dec2007, Vol. 14 Issue 6, p464-474, 11p, 4 charts Abstract: In order to investigate whether cognitive dysregulation contributed to memory impairment in trauma patients, recent trauma victims, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) patients and healthy controls were compared with regard to verbal memory and dysfunctional cognitions. There were no significant group differences with regard to verbal memory. Concerning dysfunctional cognitions, recent trauma victims hardly differed from controls, unlike PTSD patients, who showed more negative appraisal, more dysfunctional thought control strategies and externality than controls. None of them were related to memory performance in the recent trauma group, and there was a negative correlation with distraction strategy in PTSD patients. In recent trauma victims, negative appraisal increased with time since the trauma. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] DOI: 10.1002/cpp.545 (AN 27883308)

Memory for emotionally neutral information in posttraumatic stress disorder: A meta-analytic investigation. Brewin, Chris R.; Kleiner, Jennifer Sue; Vasterling, Jennifer J.; Journal of Abnormal Psychology, Vol 116(3), Aug 2007. pp. 448-463. [Journal Article] Abstract: Studies have come to conflicting conclusions about whether posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with poorer memory for emotionally neutral information. The authors report a meta-analysis of 27 studies that investigated verbal and/or visual memory in samples with PTSD and healthy controls. The results indicated that the association between PTSD and memory impairment appears to be robust, small to moderate in size, and stronger for verbal than for visual memory. Effect sizes did not vary according to whether recall was immediate or delayed. The association is found in both civilian and military samples and cannot be readily explained as being due to the use of nontraumatized healthy control groups or concurrent head injury. The findings are placed in the context of recent neurobiological and experimental cognitive research. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2007 APA, all rights reserved)

Mémoire et émotion dans le trouble de stress post-traumatique (TSPT). = Memory and emotion in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Tapia, Géraldine; Clarys, David; Isingrini, Michel; Canadian Psychology/Psychologie Canadienne, Vol 48(2), May 2007. pp. 106-119. [Journal Article] Abstract: In Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), the hypermnesis linked to the trauma produces various emotional disturbances that result in a state of increased hypersensitivity towards environmental stimuli. Accordingly, memory and emotional functions play a predominant role in the PTSD symptomatology. Through a distinctive approach to the cognitive psychopathology research, the goal of this review is to define the nature of the links between the memory and emotional processes in PTSD. The research conducted in this area, whether on explicit or implicit memory, reveals a memory bias in information specific to the trauma. In determining the workings of the cognitive mechanisms responsible for this traumatic information bias, we hope that this will provide a basis for progress to be made in the understanding of the cognitive mechanisms responsible for the repetitive mnemic symptoms of PTSD. Overgeneral autobiographical memory and traumatic events: An evaluative review. Moore, Sally A.; Zoellner, Lori A.; Psychological Bulletin, Vol 133(3), May 2007. pp. 419-437. [Journal Article] Abstract: Does trauma exposure impair retrieval of autobiographical memories? Many theorists have suggested that the reduced ability to access specific memories of life events, termed overgenerality, is a protective mechanism helping attenuate painful emotions associated with trauma. The authors addressed this question by reviewing 24 studies that assessed trauma exposure and overgenerality, examining samples with posttraumatic stress disorder, acute stress disorder, depression, traumatic event exposure, and other clinical disorders. Limitations are discussed, including variations in assessment of events, depression, and overgenerality and the need for additional comparison groups. Across studies, there was no consistent association between trauma exposure and overgenerality, suggesting that trauma exposure is unlikely to be the primary mechanism leading to overgenerality. Instead, psychopathology factors such as depression and posttraumatic stress appear to be more consistently associated with overgenerality. Alternative overgenerality theories may help identify key overgenerality mechanisms, improving current understanding of autobiographical memory processes underlying psychopathology. When a trauma becomes a key to identity: enhanced integration of trauma memories predicts posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms. By: Berntsen, Dorthe; Rubin, David C.. Applied Cognitive Psychology, May2007, Vol. 21 Issue 4, p417-431, 15p, 1 graph Abstract: The Centrality of Event Scale (CES) measures the extent to which a traumatic memory forms a central component of personal identity, a turning point in the life story and a reference point for everyday inferences. In two studies, we show that the CES is positively correlated with severity of PTSD symptoms, even when controlling for measures of anxiety, depression, dissociation and self-consciousness. The findings contradict the widespread view that poor integration of the traumatic memory into one's life story is a main cause of PTSD symptoms. Instead, enhanced integration appears to be a key issue. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] DOI: 10.1002/acp.1290 (AN 24746918)
