E perchè ritieni cosi importante vincere? ect ect ect.

Effects of Playing Violent Videogames on Chinese Adolescents' Pro-Violence Attitudes, Attitudes Toward Others, and Aggressive Behavior. By: Wei, Ran. CyberPsychology & Behavior, Jun2007, Vol. 10 Issue 3, p371-380, 10p, 3 charts Abstract: This study examines the effects of exposure to online videogame violence on Chinese adolescents' attitudes toward violence, empathy, and aggressive behavior. Results of bivariate analyses show that playing violent videogames on the Internet was associated with greater tolerance of violence, a lower emphatic attitude, and more aggressive behavior. Results of hierarchical regression analyses showed sustained relationships between exposure and pro-violent attitudes and empathy when exposure was examined simultaneously with gender, computer use, and Internet use. However, the linkage between exposure and aggression became non-significant, suggesting that the effects of playing violent videogames were greater for attitudinal outcomes than on overt behavior. Gender differences in playing videogames and in effects were also found. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] DOI: 10.1089/cpb.2006.9942 (AN 25536573)

Experiences of Time Loss among Videogame Players: An Empirical Study. By: Wood, Richard T. A.; Griffiths, Mark D.; Parke, Adrian. CyberPsychology & Behavior, Feb2007, Vol. 10 Issue 1, p38-44, 7p, 3 charts Abstract: Playing videogames is now a major leisure pursuit, yet research in the area is comparatively sparse. Previous correlational evidence suggests that subjective time loss occurs during playing videogames. This study examined experiences of time loss among a relatively large group of gamers ( n = 280). Quantitative and qualitative data were collected through an online survey. Results showed that time loss occurred irrespective of gender, age, or frequency of play, but was associated with particular structural characteristics of games such as their complexity, the presence of multi-levels, missions and/or high scores, multiplayer interactions, and plot. Results also demonstrated that time loss could have both positive and negative outcomes for players. Positive aspects of time loss included helping players to relax and temporarily escape from reality. Negative aspects included the sacrificing of other things in their lives, guilty feelings about wasted time, and social conflict. It is concluded that for many gamers, losing track of time is a positive experience and is one of the main reasons for playing videogames. Breaking the Stereotype: The Case of Online Gaming. By: Griffiths, Mark D.; Davies, Mark N.O.; Chappell, Darren. CyberPsychology & Behavior, Feb2003, Vol. 6 Issue 1, p81-91, 11p Abstract: Despite the rise of computer games as a leisure phenomenon, there has been relatively little research into this area. Furthermore, almost all of the research to date has concentrated on arcade or console games. More recently, the Internet has become a new medium in which players can play videogames. Since there is no published research in this area, some "benchmark" data on which future research can build was collected from two online gaming fan sites. Sociodemographics showed that the majority of players were male (approximately 85%). Over 60% of players were older than 19 years. The data provide clear evidence that the game clientele is very much an adult profile and suggest a different picture to the stereotypical image of an adolescent online gamer. The stereotype of the typical online player being a socially withdrawn young male with limited sex role identity appears to be misplaced. VIDEO GAMES AND THE ELDERLY. By: Goldstein, Jeffrey; Cajko, Lara; Oosterbroek, Mark; Michielsen, Moniek; Van Houten, Oscar; Salverda, Femke. Social Behavior & Personality: An International Journal, 1997, Vol. 25 Issue 4, p345, 8p Abstract: We studied the effects of playing video games (Super Tetris) on the reaction time, cognitive/perceptual adaptability, and emotional well-being of 22 non-institutionalized elderly people aged 69 to 90. Volunteers in an elderly community in the Netherlands were randomly assigned to a videogameplaying experimental group or a non-playing control group. The televisions of the 10 videogame players were provided with Nintendo SuperNes systems. Participants played Super Tetris 5 hours a week for 5 weeks, and maintained a log of their play. Before and after this play period, measures of reaction time (Steinberg Test), cognitive/perceptual adaptability (Stroop Color Word Test), and emotional well-being (self-report questionnaire) were administered. Playing video games was related to a significant improvement in the Sternberg reaction time task, and to a relative increase in selfreported well-being. On the Stroop Color Word Test, both the experimental and control groups improved significantly, but the difference between groups was not statistically significant. The videogame-playing group had faster reaction times and felt a more positive sense of well-being compared to their nonplaying counterparts. Consistent with previous research on video games and the elderly, the present study finds the strongest effects on measures of reaction time, and the weakest effects on cognitive performance measures. Explanations and alternative interpretations of these findings are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] (AN 8761027)

Add AddedVIDEOGAMES, AGGRESSION, AND SELF-ESTEEM: A SURVEY. By: Atkins, E.; Nixon, K.; Fling, S.; Smith, L.; Rodriguez, T.; Thornton, D.. Social Behavior & Personality: An International Journal, 1992, Vol. 20 Issue 1, p39-38, 7p Abstract: A survey was administered to 153 sixth through twelfth graders. It included items on videogame play plus self-esteem and aggression scales. Teachers also rated the children on self-esteem and aggression. Amount of videogame play correlated with aggression and not with self-esteem. About 47% of the sample said some videogames might foster anger or aggression. Among other results was evidence that boys play videogames more than girls and are more aggressive than girls. Self-esteem and aggression were positively correlated on teacher ratings but negatively on self-ratings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] (AN 12709739)

A Study of Time Management: The Correlation between Video Game Usage and Academic Performance Markers. By: Anand, Vivek. CyberPsychology & Behavior, Aug2007, Vol. 10 Issue 4, p552-559, 8p, 4 charts, 6 graphs Abstract: This study analyzes the correlation between video game usage and academic performance. Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and grade-point average (GPA) scores were used to gauge academic performance. The amount of time a student spends playing video games has a negative correlation with students' GPA and SAT scores. As video game usage increases, GPA and SAT scores decrease. A chi-squared analysis found a p value for video game usage and GPA was greater than a 95% confidence level (0.005 < p < 0.01). This finding suggests that dependence exists. SAT score and video game usage also returned a p value that was significant (0.01 < p < 0.05). Chi-squared results were not significant when comparing time spent studying and an individual's SAT score. This research suggests that video games may have a detrimental effect on an individual's GPA and possibly on SAT scores. Although these results show statistical dependence, proving cause and effect remains difficult, since SAT scores represent a single test on a given day. The effects of video games maybe be cumulative; however, drawing a conclusion is difficult because SAT scores represent a measure of general knowledge. GPA versus video games is more reliable because both involve a continuous measurement of engaged activity and performance. The connection remains difficult because of the complex nature of student life and academic performance. Also, video game usage may simply be a function of specific personality types and characteristics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] DOI: 10.1089/cpb.2007.9991 (AN 26271120)

Video Games and the Pedagogy of Place. By: Hutchison, David. Social Studies, Jan2007, Vol. 98 Issue 1, p35-40, 6p, 2bw Abstract: In this article the author explores the construction of place within virtual worlds and, in particular, in video games that appeal widely to children and youths. With the notable exception of "edutainment" titles, gaming and education have traditionally been viewed as separate pursuits. Yet, after school, millions of children and teens spend inordinate amounts of time immersed in virtual worlds that invite exploration and reward. Although they are ignored or, worse yet, dismissed by many adults, video game environments are valued place contexts for millions of young people. The author explores the elements of design that make virtual worlds so attractive to gamers and suggests strategies for incorporating video games into educational programs in a pedagogically sound way. Personal investigator. By: Matthews, Mark; Coyle, David; Anthony, Kate. Therapy Today, Sep2006, Vol. 17 Issue 7, p30-33, 4p; Abstract: The article discusses the use of computer games and video games to help engage adolescents in psychotherapy. The game targets adolescents with mental health problems such as depression, anxiety and social skills deficits. It was intended firstly as a computer-mediated tool to aid therapeutic conversations between adolescents and therapists and secondly for potential self-directed use online. The game allows clients to set their own therapeutic goals and recognise their own strengths and values. (AN 22690179)

Editorial: Life Is a Game. By: Hoppenstand, Gary. Journal of Popular Culture, Apr2006, Vol. 39 Issue 2, p183-184, 2p; Abstract: The article comments on the opposition of some watchdog groups to the evil influence of video games and popular culture. Popular culture has been criticized by the cultural and religious elite. Video games are considered to have contributed to the corruption of the minds and morals of the young. However, the gatekeepers of morality fail to take into account the democratic nature of popular culture itself. The problem actually resides in the audience that engages in video games and not with the media itself. DOI: 10.1111/j.1540-5931.2006.00227.x (AN 20068913)

Gender Differences and Styles in the Use of Digital Games. By: Bonanno, Philip; Kommers, P. A. M.. Educational Psychology, Feb2005, Vol. 25 Issue 1, p13-41, 29p Abstract: This paper reports work in progress investigating gender differences and styles in the use of digital games amongst advanced level biology students. It is an elaboration on previous work exploring the relationship between cognitive style and academic performance in Maltese students taking biology at advanced level. In this previous work the cognitive style of 581 (212 male and 369 female) advanced biology students was correlated with their academic performance in five different subjects. Pearson's correlation showed that the wholist-analytic dimension, the verbal-imagery' dimension, and gender were not correlated. Regression analysis showed that none of the style dimension combinations had a significant effect on performance in any of the subjects. However, gender proved to be a stronger determinant of performance. These results were interpreted from a cognitive neuroscience perspective. Numerous studies have consistently found gender differences in language and visuospatial skills. Female superiority is seen on tests of both receptive and productive language, and on more complex tasks such as making analogies and creative writing. Males have an advantage in visuospatial reasoning, being more adept at performing disembedding and internal spatial transformations. In view of these results and the constantly reported gender difference in the use of digital games, this paper describes the initial stage of an investigation about gender-determined propensities to digital media. Different studies claim that males dedicate more time than female students to playing digital games. A marked emphasis on the use of particular game genres by the different sexes is also reported. This reported phenomenon is investigated within the context of Maltese students taking advanced biology. Through a questionnaire, data were collected about the time students spend playing digital games, their preferred platform, and their preferred games. Data were analysed to establish gender... The Structural Characteristics of Video Games: A Psycho-Structural Analysis. By: Wood, Richard T. A.; Griffiths, Mark D.; Chappell, Darren; Davies, Mark N. O.. CyberPsychology & Behavior, Feb2004, Vol. 7 Issue 1, p1-10, 10p Abstract: There is little doubt that video game playing is a psychological and social phenomenon. This paper outlines the main structural characteristics of video game playing (i.e., those characteristics that either induce gaming in the first place or are inducements to continue gaming irrespective of the individual's psychological, physiological, or socio-economic status). This online study is the first ever to assess what structural characteristics (if any) are important to a group of self-selected video game players (n = 382). The main variables examined were sound, graphics, background and setting, duration of game, rate of play, advancement rate, use of humor, control options, game dynamics, winning and losing features, character development, brand assurance, and multi-player features. Although there were many major gender differences, one of the main overall findings was the importance of a high degree of realism (i.e., realistic sound, graphics, and setting). Other important characteristics included a rapid absorption rate, character development, the ability to customize the game, and multiplayer features. Suggestions for future research are outlined. The Difference Between Playing Games With and Without the Computer: A Preliminary View. By: Antonietti, Alessandro; Mellone, Rosa. Journal of Psychology, Mar2003, Vol. 137 Issue 2, p133, 12p Abstract: ABSTRACT. The authors address the question of whether associations between video games and cognitive and metacognitive variables depend either on the features of the computer or on the content of the game that the computer allows one to play. An experiment to separate these two kinds of effects was carried out by using a traditional version and a computer-supported version of Pegopolis, a solitaire game. The two versions were exactly the same except that they were played by moving pieces either on a real board or on a virtual computer-presented board. The performance levels and strategies followed during the game by the 40 undergraduates who took part in the experiment were not significantly different in the real and virtual conditions. None of the participants transferred playing strategies or practice from one version of the game to the other. Scores were not affected by gender or by the studies pursued by participants, the habit of playing games in the traditional manner or playing video games, or intelligence. Retrospective reports did not support differences in the subjective experience between the two versions. Results showed that video games, when they do not make much use of the computer's special features, produce effects because of the situations they simulate rather than because of features of the computer itself.
