No!

Ciao a tutti!

ciao

O.K. Following a private message's exchange, we agreed to continue this conversation in English, hoping this wouldn't be a problem for other people.
Unfortunately, I don't speak a word in Polish. But I'll try to learn some basis.
What's the role of personality structure's in a diagnostic and psychological treatment's process?
In my mind, I think it's a fatal error to concentrate our efforts on symptomatology. Symptoms are the most variable part of patient's Self. And don't have meanings on their own. What's the meaning of a phobia, in se? Or the meaning of a panic attack?
Symptoms are a product, often a by-product af somewhat else. And assume their meaning when we are able to insert them inside a personality structure. Elsewhere, we cannot understand if they are subsequent to a conflict, a deficit, or are the result of a trauma.
So, when people say us: "I cannot drive my car, if my love isn't at my side", or "When I arrive to a crossroad, I have to stop, even if traffic lights are greens, because I cannot stop of worry about the possibility that a car driven by drunk people could hit my one and hurt me" (both real cases), the question we have to pose to ourselves is "what does that means, for this person?".
And we'll confront with several possibilities. If we are in front af a patient with a neurotic personality structure, oedypical, where the conflict among instances is preminent, we will have to choose a way very different than the way we choose if the patient has a latent psychotic, pre-oedypical, structure, where elements relating to deficit are at the top.
And it's different if a phobia is the result of a conflict, a deficit or a trauma.
So, in my view, is not the symptom that drives me in the intervention. Is "who is this person who sits in front of me". And what means for him/her?
How may I assess a personality structure? Depending on your school of thinking, we may use different instruments. We can use MMPI, or Rorschach, o Object Relation Technique, or simply a clinical understanding of what a patient says to us. I'm studying to become a bioenergetic therapist, so I observe the form of the body, the movement, the feelings, the way a person use himself or herself to build up or to avoid a relation with me.
Personality structure, and body structure, refer to how a person live in the world, how perceive it, how manage it, how adapt himself to it, how think, feels, move. How can we be able to help him, if we decide to look only at the symptoms he's lamenting for, and not try to understand WHO we are confronting with?
Hoping my english would be good enough to be understanded
Buona vita
Guglielmo

Ciao Willy! Thanks for this explanation. Why you treat symptoms as a part of Self. For me symptoms are the informations about how the person manage with his problem. On what You would like to concentrate your efforts during therapy?
I try to do this focusing on the functioning solutions which patient choose to solve his problem. I believe that everyone has hide resources to cope with all problems which occur in his live.
Symptoms are a product, often a by-product af somewhat else. And assume their meaning when we are able to insert them inside a personality structure. Elsewhere, we cannot understand if they are subsequent to a conflict, a deficit, or are the result of a trauma.
If I understand well, you try to understand the patient' symptoms, inserting them to his personality? And you discover patient' personality using various tests?
THe past events like conflicts, trauma, deficit (of what?) are written down in patient current personality? Yes?
And we'll confront with several possibilities. If we are in front af a patient with a neurotic personality structure, oedypical, where the conflict among instances is preminent, we will have to choose a way very different than the way we choose if the patient has a latent psychotic, pre-oedypical, structure, where elements relating to deficit are at the top.
Your explanation has psychoanalitic backgroud. But If I perceive human being not by a events from past which influence his presence? If my vision of human personality I don't base on psychosexual stages of development?
What have I do?
Your explanation is one of many, depends on which approach you choose.
That's way before I try to show that categorization and given a patient a ettichette (for example that my patient has neurotic personality structure, etc. or have a borderline personality, etc..) - for me is a kind of limitation.
I see a human being "qui ed ora" with present symptoms and solution which he use to solve his problems.
So, in my view, is not the symptom that drives me in the intervention. Is "who is this person who sits in front of me". And what means for him/her?
I agree with You in 100% !!
Grazie Willy per la discussione interesante
